Went to see the latest installment of James Bond last night, in the 50th year of membership to the ‘licence to kill’ gang. Bond, like Doctor Who, has had many iterations, each with their own fans and critics. I have always been an ardent Sean Connery era lover, and Pierce Brosnan was ‘my Bond’ growing up - but Daniel Craig is an excellent bridge between the old and new eras, and nowhere is this more relevant than in this latest outing in which the story is all about the ‘new era’ or terrorism, verses the old school of secret agents under cover.
There is a pleasing amount of twisting and turning and despite only seeing it nearly a month after it’s box-office breaking opening week I still managed to avoid the major spoilers so I will dutifully avoid spelling out any more than to say that there is much nostalgia (both subtle and knowing), a wonderful amount of Judy Dench, and Javier Bardem’s character, Silva, is an exceptionally theatrical and brilliantly played part.
Sam Mendes does a wonderful job of proving that Bond is as relevant today as ever, and that “Bond will return”, as the credits have always reassured us. My only disapointment is that my favourite modern Bond scorer, David Arnold, was let go for this outing, and there wasn’t enough of the Barry theme - although Adele’s Skyfall theme makes up for that adequetly.

“Venturethree has animated the HMV logo for the retailer’s Christmas campaign.”
With a touch of PIXAR’s Luxo Jr about it, these lovely brand ads feature a brief sketch featuring the companies 90 year-old mascot and his music player of choice. Due for release over the Christmas period, this 2012. I look forward to seeing all eleven episodes. And keep an eye on their Oxford Street store front where the two will also feature in three-dimensional form.

The ‘good’ kind of brainwashing aimed at cinefiles, I’m sure.

Not convinced James Horner’s Spider-Man themes are anywhere near as good as Danny Elfman’s.
